Careful planning for building re-opening

The city of Columbia has released recommendations for a phased-in reopening of businesses, including churches.

The church council has reviewed these recommendations and also received suggestions from our district superintendent and Bishop Bob Farr. The council has unanimously decided to create a phased-in approach to reopening the church. Please know this phased-in plan will be continually re-evaluated as new information is available related to the current circumstances of the pandemic here in Columbia. The phased-in approach is:

  • Continue worshiping online. We've added an 8 a.m. worship service in the west parking lot. Click here for more information.
  • Staff and church leadership will be  working through a suggested reopening strategy to make sure the church is ready for people to return to the building.
  • Beginning May 18, the church office will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Thursday.
  • After May 25, the church will open for scheduled church small groups to meet in larger meeting spaces (up to 10 people) using social distancing practices with planned cleaning following the gatherings.
  • No outside church groups will be allowed to use the building until further notice.

Returning to in-person worship is our goal, and we will do so when the time is right. Even though the building is closed, the church is still alive and well. The church is still praising and worshiping God in powerful ways each week online. Please invite your neighbors, your coworkers, your friends, and your family to worship with us. Continue to spread the good news and hope of Jesus Christ with the world in all you do.

If you need financial assistance or are not able to connect to worship and small groups online, please call 445-6131 and leave a message in the congregational mailbox (ext. 251). We have volunteers who are willing to help and money available to provide assistance.

New churchwide study

"Finding Peace in an Anxious World" uses the book of Proverbs and "The Serenity Prayer" as a guide to help Christians find their way through anxiety, worry and fear and move towards God's peace that surpasses all understanding.

Using "The Serenity Prayer" as a scaffold, "Finding Peace in an Anxious World" explores ways to discover peace through scriptural and spiritual disciplines so that we can be rooted in God and energized to live fully as disciples of Christ.

This study, led by Sharon Smith, will meet via Zoom each Thursday in August at 6:30 p.m. To register, or for more information, email Heather Darby or call 573-214-2010. The study book costs $11 in paperback or is available for $5.95 as a Kindle download directly from Amazon.

Connecting through virtual gatherings

Wednesday night group

You are invited to join the Wesleyan Class Meeting group. This is not a "curriculum-based" small group but one based on a book "The Class Meeting" by Kevin Watson, who bases his writing on John Wesley's small groups in the early church. It is our intent to share our personal spiritual journey, successes and failures, in a "safe" environment where we can grow in our faith.

New members are welcome. Email Mary Dolan for all of the information about how to join online.

Saturday morning men's group

You are invited to join a faithful and fun group of men for Bible study on Saturday mornings at 7. Email Rick Ellsworth for information about how to join online.
