The building is closed - but the church is not

(March 25, 2020)

Based on the stay-at-home order from the city and county administrators and the recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the church council has approved the closing of the church building through April 24.

Online on Sundays, we will have worship at 9:30 a.m., children at 10:45 a.m. and youth at 7 p.m.

During this time, staff will work from home and will continue responding to emails and phone messages. Mail will be checked daily by a staff person. To reach a staff person, please call the church at 445-6131 and leave a message in the appropriate mailbox. If you need immediate assistance, please leave a message in the Congregational Care mailbox and a staff person will respond quickly.

Please know that just because the building is closed, the church is not. The people are the church and as the body of Christ we will continue to check on and share God's love with one another. Several groups are using Zoom to gather and stay connected, please let me know if you want to try this for your group. On Thursday, a new opportunity to join in on a virtual dinner for eight will be announced.

Thank you for your being the church in a new way. Please join us and many others from around the world in a day of prayer tomorrow asking God to rid the world of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Plans for worship and other activities

(March 17, 2020)

"So let's not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good.

At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don't give up, or quit.

Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance,

let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us

in the community of faith."

-Galatians 6:9-10 (The Voice)-

We are living in a time of uncertainty and change, but it will also gives us time to care for one another and deepen our relationship with God. Community is making adjustments to provide ministry during this time, while following the recommendations from health and government leaders.

These adjustments go into effect immediately and will last until March 31. We will determine our plans for April by the end of March.

Worship

We will continue to gather together in worship online at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday. The technology worked well last weekend and we will continue to use the following methods to provide worship:

On a computer or a mobile device

On your TV using a Roku device:

  • Search for Community United Methodist ChurchChannel

For those without internet or computer access, we are working on a phone based audio option for worship. We plan to announce the details of this option soon.

Our app can also be downloaded to help you remain connected during worship. You can register attendance, submit prayer requests, view upcoming events, give online and view previous messages. Click here to download the app.

You can submit prayer requests by emailing prayer@communityumc.net, through the connect app, on our website or by calling 445-6131.

  • Mail your gifts to 3301 W. Broadway, Columbia, MO 65203.
  • Online on our website.

Weekly activities and office hours

  • All activities are canceled for the rest of March. We will be offering video and audio conferencing resources for our ministries and groups to stay connected.
  • The church will be open for individuals to pray (remember to practice social distancing). During church office hours, the west entrance will be the only entrance unlocked.

  • Global Market is closed through the end of March.

Congregational Care

  • Pastors and Congregational Care team members will continue to connect with you. Personal visits to care facilities and hospitals have been restricted. We will make every effort to support you through all avenues available.

Finally, know that you are being prayed for and remembered during this season. We look forward to hearing how people are helping each other remain connected as a community and encouraging each other to grow closer to God.

In-person activities canceled for March 15

(March  14, 2020)

After much conversation and prayer, Community United Methodist Church will worship only online Sunday, March 15, at 9:30 a.m. and all other activities are cancelled. This decision was made with faithful discernment and we will miss gathering together in person. One reason for this decision is that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people over 60 and those with health risks practice social distancing during this time.

We believe this is the best way to love our neighbor as Christ loves us. We invite you to check in on people you know that are anxious or are needing some help. "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." (Psalm 46:1)

We can still gather together in community using our online resource. Below are the ways you can view the worship service online tomorrow. Know that there is a concern that Facebook live may be overwhelmed by the number of churches trying to Livestream. If you have any issues with Facebook, our website or the Roku channel may be a better option. We will also record the entire service and upload it to Facebook at a later time in the day.

On a computer or a mobile device :

On your TV using a Roku device::

  • Search for Community United Methodist Church Channel

If you have questions about live streaming, please call the church at 445-6131 and leave a message for Pastor Curtis Olsen on ext. 104.

Our app can also be downloaded to help you remain connected during worship. You can register attendance, submit prayer requests, view upcoming events, give online and view previous messages. Click here to download the app.

We will continue to work with local health officials and government officials to determine the best plan moving forward and will keep you informed.

Our efforts to prevent spread of COVID-19

(March 13, 2020)

The current spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) is keeping us in a state of high alert right now, YET it is crucial for us to remember our God is faithful. As disciples of Jesus Christ we are called to draw strength from and point other people to God who is the source of peace and hope.

Scripture reminds us to "cast our anxiety (worries/fears) on God, because God cares for us." (1 Peter 5:7) God knows our struggles and gives us brothers and sisters here at Community United Methodist Church to encourage and help each other.

With this focus, we are continually praying and making practical plans to help prevent the spread of viruses, including the coronavirus. This means we are watching carefully for updates from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and will be working with local health officials to be prepared for changes as needed. Here are some practical things we are doing at church and ways we are encouraging community in coming days:

Actions happening here at church

  • We will continue to collect the offering and connection forms in baskets at the entrances to the Worship Center. You can also use our connect app (information below) to register your attendance and to give.
  • Volunteers will wipe down surfaces and touch points between or during worship services.
  • Volunteers will wipe down the shuttle before and after trips.
  • Gloved volunteers will be present to help serve coffee between services.
  • We will use pre-packaged communion cups and wafers to receive communion served by gloved volunteers on April 5.
  • Additional cleaning, with bleach, is being done throughout the week.

You can help keep yourself, your family, your friends, your church, and your community healthy and safe by following these guidelines

  • Stay home from church when you (or your family members) are sick (even a "little bit" sick), and worship with us online, instead. Currently, we will Livestream our services at 9:30 and 11 a.m. each Sunday morning (more information below) .
  • Stay home and worship with us online if you have underlying health conditions, such as diabetes, lung issues, heart disease, etc.
  • If you've traveled to a place that has a high number of COVID-19 infected individuals, please refrain from attending church services during the estimated 14-day incubation period following your return, and worship with us online.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water frequently throughout the day and for at least 20 seconds, each time. Good hygiene is more important than ever.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Put your used tissue in a waste basket. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
  • Avoid handshaking and hugging until this is resolved.

In addition, review the recommendations of the CDC to help reduce the spread of respiratory diseases.

You can Livestream our worship services at 9:30 and 11 in one of the following methods

On a computer or a mobile device:

On your TV using a Roku device:

  • Search for Community United Methodist Church Channel

If you have questions about Livestreaming, please call the church at 445-6131 and leave a message for Pastor Curtis Olsen on ext. 104.

The app can also be downloaded to help you remain connected during worship. You can register attendance, submit prayer requests, view upcoming events, give online and view previous messages. Click here to download the app.

Let us continue to care for the most vulnerable among us and pray for God's healing touch in this situation. "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)
